Course Overview
Continuing the discussion begun in Part 1 of this two-part program, technology writer and consultant Roger Grannis clearly explains and simplifies the inner working of modern information systems, enabling the business person to recognize the issues, ask the right questions, and have confidence in tackling IT-related problems. The purpose of the program is to make it easier to understand the economics of computing and communications and lay the foundation for understanding enterprise resource planning (ERP), which keeps track of orders, inventory, and work flow; banking applications that keep track of deposits, reserves, loans, and credit; and supply chain applications that connect the ERP systems of one enterprise with the equivalent systems of another. In Part 2, Grannis discusses the last four of seven models used to describe aspects of an organization's business functions and processes, and details the architecture of the IT infrastructure.

Roger Grannis - Presenter
Roger Grannis has a unique blend of creative talents that converge at the intersection of information technology, creative writing, and media. His career roots are in radio, where he began as a disk jockey and later became a commentator for National Public Radio. His foray into information technology began at Osborne/McGraw-Hill, a publisher of computer guides based in Berkeley, California, where he was National Sales Manager. Then, combining his radio and IT experience, he joined Gartner Group, where he was “The Voice of Gartner” for 17 years. At Gartner, he focused on simplifying complex content and making it accessible to a broad audience. First he was the head of sales training, where he built the entire sales training curriculum, including New Hire Training, Value Selling, and Tech 101. Then, he created and hosted the popular audio news magazine, “Talking Technology,” heard around the world by 22,000 senior technology executives. During his tenure, Gartner revenues grew from $25 million to $850 million. Roger has worked with dozens of technology companies, from small start-ups to IBM and AT&T, to increase revenues via sales training, channel development, lead generation and marketing. He is a published short story author and has moderated panels with business luminaries such as Steve Ballmer, President and CEO of Microsoft, and interviewed celebrities such as Joe Montana, Larry Bird and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He holds a B.A. degree in Speech and Psychology from Willamette University and did graduate studies in Broadcasting and Theater at San Francisco State University.
