Montgomery & Hansen, LLP began business in 2003 as Montgomery Law Group, LLP. Though the firm itself is fairly young, its attorneys collectively have decades of experience and have acted as lead counsel on transactions worth billions of dollars.

M&H was founded on the principle that a client’s interests are best served by attorneys who focus on a particular area of the law. As other firms have added practice areas indiscriminately, M&H has limited its practice to what the firm does best—build successful companies.

Being a company builder means many things. It means long, unpredictable hours, a willingness to be “always on” and a tolerance for risk that is unusual in our industry.

But, more than anything, it means a tireless commitment to surrounding clients with an ever-expanding group of people with complimentary talents and skills. M&H has been called a “Keiretsu,” a “Virtual Incubator” and an “Accelerator.”

Whatever term is appropriate, it is the ability to connect people that makes Montgomery & Hansen truly special.

As Chairman Emeritus, John Montogomery is senior legal advisor to Montogomery & Hansen LLP and its clients. He is a leading authority on the legal architecture necessary to support the emerging sustainable business paradigm where corporations exist to optimize good and profit and not solely to maximize profits for shareholders. Mr. Montgomery is available to advise clients to customize their legal architecture to support their corporation's heroic purpose and values, and ensure continuity of culture.

Mr. Montgomery was co-chair of the legal working group behind Assembly Bill 361, which established benefit corporations in California in 2012. Visionary California businesses, such as Patagonia, can now incorporate in, or convert to, a new form of corporation, the benefit corporation, that not only optimizes profits for shareholders but also provides a material positive impact on society and the environment. The preliminary economic data indicates that corporations built for the new paradigm with cultures of sustainability out perform their conventional peers. In addition, the benefit corporation supports the manifestation of a global consciousness (profit, people, and planet) in business.

In 2008, Mr. Montgomery founded StartWorks, a technology incubator which produced StartWorks University, an educational program for entrepreneurs, and created the content for Great from the Start; How Conscious Corporations Attract Success. In 2010, through StartWorks, he co-founded Chrysallis, a human development company. In 2014, he co-founded OneGlobal, an international management consultancy which applies the science of consciousness to businesses and leaders to optimize their performance for success.

Mr. Montgomery has practiced corporate law in Silicon Valley since 1984 and is AV rated. His experience includes extensive corporate counseling to public and private companies and venture capital firms. He has represented countless clients in connection with venture capital financings, initial public offerings, more than 200 public and private mergers and acquisitions, going private transactions and a variety of other general corporate matters.

Prior to founding M&H in 2003 as Montgomery Law Group, Mr. Montgomery was the co-chairman of the venture capital practice at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, LLP. Earlier in his career, he was an associate corporate attorney at Baker & McKenzie and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and an in-house attorney at The Cooper Companies. He is also an accredited executive coach and student of non-dual philosophical systems.

Mr. Montgomery is a frequent speaker on applied consciousness, sustainable business, and benefit corporations at such forums as the Future Salon, TEDx, and Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. He has also produced continuing education programs on benefit corporations for the Rutter Group and the California State Bar and on venture capital for SmartPros/Cognistar: Understanding the Venture Capital Term Sheet Process and Introduction to Venture Capital Financing Agreements. He previously served as a member of the Corporations Committee of the Business Law Section of the California State Bar and was a California lawyer of the year in 2012 for his work on California's benefit corporation legislation.

Mr. Montgomery holds a B.A. from Stanford University and a J.D. from Northwestern College of Law, Lewis & Clark College.
